I'm your coach, Annie Croner. Join us as we dive into the skills, strategies and mindset that will help you unleash your full potential. Let's go. Welcome back to the Whole Assistant Podcast. Today I'm going to be sharing two powerful thoughts to keep you in a good mental space for your job search. And this is going to kick off a series I'm going to do on mindset and how to actually level up your mindset. There's just a lot of talk these days around mindset, but nobody actually shares how to level up.
Annie Croner:
So this is the first in a three part series. Today I'm going to be focusing primarily on job seekers and perhaps some thoughts that you can think that will be helpful for you long term, especially as you're searching for a job. Job search can be a total, total rollercoaster. I've walked so many people through this transition, through big transitions of transitioning out of their role and into a new role and it is just a wild ride. And there are a couple of powerful thoughts that I clung to when I was in transition and I encourage my clients to consider as well as I'm coaching them. So I'm going to share those today. The first thought is everything is happening for me, not to me. Everything is happening for me, not to me.
Annie Croner:
And I love this thought because sometimes we can feel at the effect of our circumstances. We can feel like the universe has really screwed us over, especially if we have recently got laid off, we've been made redundant, we are no longer working for our former organizations and we can feel slighted in some way. But. But I have found this to be true for me, hands down. I'll never forget when I was applying for my last role as an executive assistant. I also interviewed at this other place before interviewing with my last executive. And I was so sold on this role. It was downtown, they were going to pay for parking or a light rail ticket in to the city and I was so excited.
Annie Croner:
But there was one red flag. They wanted me to sit at the front desk and I was supporting a C suite executive and that just seemed off to me. But I was so willing to override that because everything else about the role looks so great and I ended up not getting that position. And I just remember feeling so disappointed. And if you were in the middle of a job search, you may have had something similar happen Already where you're just feeling so disappointed by not getting this role that you're really excited about. I do think that it can be really helpful to return to this side thought of everything is happening for me, not to me, so I got laid off. That's happening for me. How is that true? And asking yourself how those things are true.
Annie Croner:
And also, when it comes to searching for your job, if you don't get an interview, if you don't move forward in the process, how is that also serving you? I'm a firm believer that we land where we're supposed to be, even if it's not the role for us for the long term, there's always a reason why. So just pay attention to that. And pay attention to how you're choosing to show up for the disappointment. And also allowing yourself to let that disappointment pull through you. Experiencing the disappointment can also be super helpful. There tend to be two different ditches that we can tend to fall into when it comes to experiencing our emotions and experiencing those challenging emotions. One is to indulge and to wallow and to go that route, not advisable. The other is to try and action your way out of the disappointment.
Annie Croner:
So for me, I am definitely an action taker. This was definitely something that I did so I would experience disappointment. I'm like, that's okay. I'm going to go apply for 10 jobs today. Let's go. And I didn't actually allow myself to experience that broad range of human emotion, didn't actually allow myself to sit with that disappointment for a minute and process through can just be a helpful thing to do as well. And we are not really taught how to do that in school. Right? We're not really taught how to sit with our emotions to actually let it pulse through us, to actually get curious around where it is in our body so we can actually experience it and then release it.
Annie Croner:
It's not that we are going to not experience that emotion again, but hopefully that emotion will take a back seat as opposed to being in the driver's seat. And the second thought that I would have us all consider onboarding, especially, especially through this job search, is what is meant for me will find me. What is meant for me will find me. And this can take away the desperation because oftentimes there's a certain point in the job search, believe me, I've walked plenty of people through this, where desperation begins to set in and we lose sight of what it is that we want, what we initially set out to achieve. And that can be challenging. But I love this thought of what is meant for me will find me in life as a whole because I am one who likes to take action. I'm one who likes to achieve goals and to shoot for shoot for the goals initially. So actually returning to what is meant for me will find me just lets me settle in.
Annie Croner:
It. It puts my mind at ease, it sets my nervous system at ease, and it reminds me that there is a bigger picture here. Whether you believe in God, the universe, whatever. I love this thought. It's just going to be so helpful for you and it's going to be helpful for you in your job search as well. And I have a resource for you guys that I want to share with you.
